Take in the sights of

Beautiful Missouri

Alley Mill & Spring

The present structure was constructed during 1893-1894 by George Washington McCaskill. With a constant water supply of 81 million gallons daily flow from Alley Spring this seemed to be an ideal place for a grist mill. Alley was home, farm and school for people who lived here a century ago. Dances, baseball games and roller skating were all part of Alley’s busier days. Many still choose Alley Spring as the site for their wedding or family reunion. Tours of the mill are given daily throughout the summer. Picnic sites are located beside the spring branch and within walking distance of the Jacks Fork River there are also 2 large pavilions that may be reserved. For information or pavilion reservations you may contact Ozark National Scenic Riverways at 573-323-4236.

Rocky Falls

Few places in the Ozarks provide a glimpse of earth’s turbulent past as well as Rocky Falls. The reddish-brown rock you see here is rhyolite porphyry. It formed as molten rock deep within the earth and flowed onto the surface about 1.5 billion years ago. At the time, no living thing existed to see the awesome flow of glowing hot lava slowly advancing over the barren landscape. Rocky Falls can be visited year round. It is located on Route NN, off of Route H east of Eminence and Winona. It has a walking trail, bathrooms, picnic tables and fire grills.

Blue Spring

Called "Spring of the Summer Sky" by Native Americans, the more famous Blue Spring is on the Current River and is one of the most beautiful places you'll ever find, anywhere. The spring itself is over 310 feet deep, one of the deepest in the United States. This gives it a vivid blue color that one must see to believe. If you were to place the Statue of Liberty in Blue Spring, her torch would be five feet below the surface of the water! The spring is reached by a short trail which abounds with wildflowers in spring and fall colors in autumn.

Round Spring & Cave

ROUND SPRING CAVE - Park Rangers conduct two hour lantern tours for the public of this beautiful natural cavern. These somewhat strenuous "underground hikes" are limited to the first 15 people. Wear sturdy shoes and bring a jacket or sweater, as it is cool in the cave. Tours are offered daily, at 10:00, noon and 2:00, during the summer months. ROUND SPRING - The spring itself is some 55 feet deep, rising in a nearly circular pool of water before flowing under a natural bridge to join the Current River. On an average day, some 26 million gallons of water flow from the spring. At quiet times, otters, wood ducks and great blue herons may be seen in the spring. People however, are prohibited from swimming or wading in it. You may visit and enjoy the wheelchair accessible paved trail around the spring at any time.

Wild Horses

There are four herds around the Ozark Scenic Riverways. The Shawnee Creek herd is the easiest to spot, followed by the Round Spring herd (at the Round Spring campground), then the Broadfoot herd. The Rocky Creek herd is the most feral and difficult to find. Keep at least a 50 foot distance from the horses.
